Modern

Modern means to be new, to be in accordance with the contemporary stage of civilization, to correspond to the actual technical progress.

Technologies

Technologies are one of the motors of the social, economical and scientific progress.

Quality

Quality is, in the broad sense, a degree of excellence which express the extent that something is suitable for the purpose for which it was created and, in effect restricted, represents compliance with the requirements, lack of defects, or to the satisfaction of customer needs .

Innovation

Innovation has to characterize the activity developed by the engineers and scientists.

Institute of Technical Sciences of Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts ITS SASA

Institute of Technical Sciences of Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ITS SASA) is a renown scientific institution locally and worldwide, established in 1947 to perform scientific and research work in the field of technical, technological and natural sciences, to instigate their development and promote basic and applied research within them and, in cooperation with public economy or independently, realize the application of its achievements.

Vision of the Institute is
  • » to become internationally recognizable in the field of study and application of the wide spectrum of frontier technologies,
  • » to develop innovative technologies through high-quality research and to transfer them to the industrial sector,
  • » to develop new models that integrate research, education and innovation in the sphere of academic and industrial research,
  • » to support and instigate possibilities for regular and post-graduate studies,
  • » to serve as an incubator for companies' creation, using research generated in the Institute and
  • » to promote high technologies on the national and international level.

Institute has 33 employees, 24 of whom are included in research projects Fifteen associates are holders of PhD degree, with appropriate scientific titles, and four of MSc degree (non Bologna compliant), whereas two have a Bologna-compliant Master's degree. Four members of SASA have been, for a long time, heads of the Institute's research programmes and 15 young researchers are preparing for the scientific research vocation, eight of which are working on their PhD and seven on their MSc theses.

Vivid International and national cooperation plays a very important role in the Institute's activities. A particularly formal or informal cooperation has been established with research institutions with the USA, European Union, Russia, Ukraine, Slovenia and other countries. Bilateral cooperation programmes exist with "Jozef Stefan" Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia and RWTH, Aachen University, Germany. Scientific cooperation through common research projects exists with the University Carlos III and Complutence University, both from Madrid, Spain, Russian Academy of Sciences, particularly with the Institute for the Problems in Chemical Physics of RAS as well as the Frantscevich Institute for Problems of Materials Science NASU, Kiev, Ukraine. The ITS SASA is also involved in the implementation of the European's INCOMAT Project and COST 539 Action, as well as Japanese NEDO Joint International Research Grant Project. With the objective of establishing scientific collaboration in the field of materials science, the ITS SASA signed the Agreements with Faculdades Católicas, sponsor of Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro ( PUC-Rio) in June 2008 and JWRI, Osaka University, Japan in August 2009.

The Institute is one of the foundations of the International Institute for the Science of Sintering (www.iiss.sanu.ac.rs). Numerous activities in more than 35 years long history of the International Institute for the Science of Sintering helped to make the research done in the Institute become recognized worldwide. From today's point of view, this long-lasting activity, especially during Cold War period of world separation, played enormous role in gathering the most famous scientists of West and East working in the field of sintering, long before globalization of nowadays. Almost 40 years of publishing the Science of Sintering journal, the official journal of the International Institute for the Science of Sintering, resulted in its inclusion in the SCI list of journals.

The Institute is the forming initiator and the hinge of the Yugoslav Materials Research Society (www.mrs-serbia.org.rs) that gathers the most eminent researchers and institutions in the field of materials science and engineering in the country, which organized, until now, eight Conferences (in 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006). Proceedings from these Conferences were published by Trans Tech Publications, Zurich, Switzerland in the Mat. Sci. Forum edition (all Proceedings are available on www.ttp.net).

In cooperation with the Yugoslav Materials Research Society, the Institute also have organized five Young Researchers Seminars in the Materials Science and Engineering, traditionally held at the end of December of each year in the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Main goal of the seminar is to gather young researchers (less than 35 years old) working in this field and give them opportunity to present their latest research and results in front of their colleagues, mentors and project managers. Selected papers from the seminar are published in well known national journals.

The general research activities in the Institute are realized within Centres and Departments, i.e. programmes in the field of general activity of the Institute.

  • » Fine Particles Processing and Nanotechnologies
  • » Advanced Semiconducting Materials and Sensors
  • » Robotics, Mehatronics and Active Systems
  • » Metallic Constructions in Civil Engineering

The Centre for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnologies realizes a number of programs that represent the basis for various researches in the field of advanced materials and nanotechnologies as follows:

  • » Aerosol Synthesis of Fine Particles and Films
  • » Metastable materials and Mechanochemistry
  • » Advanced biomaterials
  • » Polymeric micro and nanoparticles for controlled and targeted delivery of medicaments

Each program has a different structure and number of associates and they all cooperate closely together. In carrying out their research goals, all groups interface with the educational mission of the Institute, potential industrial partners and the Community.

Significant activity in the field of the education of young researchers was previously a subject of an appropriate attention. Large number of our associates and the associates from other institutions had done the research that was the basis of their PhD, MSc and BSc theses. Due to the quality of programs and good cooperation with a number of national and international Faculties, more than 50 of such theses were finished in our Institute. The largest number of publications was based on these theses, so, from this point of view, the complete relation between research and education was established.
